About Course

The Apprentice Beekeeping Course is designed for the person who has had at least one year of hands-on beekeeping, has taken the Beginning Beekeeping class, and wants to know more about honey bees and beekeeping management practices. While the Beginning Beekeeping Course provides basic information for the person who is in the process of making up their mind or who has decided to start beekeeping, the Apprentice Course is for the person who wants to have more in-depth information.

Course Content

Week One
Week One introduces the honey bee, Apis mellifera, and explains how its physical characteristics, classification, and highly organized social behavior influence the way a colony functions and interacts with its environment. Understanding normal honey bee biology and colony behavior helps beekeepers recognize signs that something may be wrong. This week also reviews common hive types, tools, and protective clothing, emphasizing that equipment should be selected according to the beekeeper’s physical abilities, available time, management goals, and budget.
